Blog: Collaborators – Julia-Lee Fullerton

Introduction

A huge supporter of the first half of 3MS+ was Julia Fullerton. In the early stages of the project, she was by far one of the biggest supporters of the project and collaborated on many shorts.

About Julia-Lee Fullerton

Julia is based out of Regina, SK and has worked in film and television for over eight years. She has worked in virtually all departments of the local television and film industry.  She has worked on many music videos, feature films, and short films in and around Regina.  To find out more about Julia, please visit her website! Below is a list of some of the projects we have worked on together.

Def 3′s “Stutter-Step”

Metal Heart

Description: Ever since I started producing and posting a 3MS+ everyday, I have focused on technique and work-flow. When trying to accomplish such a feat, precision and experimentation is key. For this short, I decided to merge what I have learned with a little experimentation using time as the motivator. The focus of my trip to Ontario and Québec was perfecting the DSLR time lapse work-flow with the goal of creating crystal clear panning time lapses — very ‘similar’ to the quality of “Sky” by Philip Bloom (without the use of expensive glass). For this video, I wanted to apply this new found ability to capture a ‘clean’ time lapse while also using the video capabilities of DSLR’s. This is a very slow piece focusing on the sometimes harsh Saskatchewan climate.

Julia-lee and I decided to go out ‘storm chasing’ but soon realized that all the clouds were dissipating and that our hopes for crazy tornadoes and lightning was short lived. We found a lonely tree in the middle of the field and decided to make both the tree and Julia the focus of the short.

Edmonton New Years

Description: For New Years, Julia Fullerton and I headed out to Edmonton, Alberta. Unfortunately, due to illness, I spent my New Years in a hotel room — in bed by 9pm.

Jane Doe

Description: While at my cabin, Julia-lee Fullerton and I headed out to create a short film.

Saint Nicholas

Description: Life is a constant learning process. No matter how experienced you are in any field, you can always learn something new in any situation. Since the start of 3MS, I have seen myself grow through the work I produce everyday. The biggest eye opener was working on “Saint Nicholas” because I decided to merge what I have learned about DSLR film-making with my proven methods of production (my personal work flow).

For this film, I decided to use all my DSLR’s for time lapses and for the real-time and slow motion shots, I would use my HVX200 because of the codecs and native editing with FCP. The result of this work flow is that I was able to return to my 1 hour time limit on post-production — which up until now did not exist because of the increased time it takes to process DSLR files — be it time lapses or 1080p footage from the camera using the Apple Pro Res codecs.

Not only am I able to integrate the high quality time lapses, I can do it with ease! Over the next week, I will be experimenting with different work flows, codecs, and methods in which to address the time frames for post production in all videos produced in Ontario and Québec. I apologize in advance for the delay that will result from these tests! However, I will be commenting on work flows when I find the most effective work flow for my needs.

Banff Series Teaser

Description: While a lot of footage hit the cutting room floor, I felt it would be fun to cut together some of the footage that didn’t make any of the cuts in the “Banff” series. I decided to have a little bit of fun and forget some normal editing “no-no’s” and see what I could come up with. You will also get a glimpse of some of the camera set-ups that we used for some of the shots. Enjoy this little slice of Banff, Alberta featuring Julia Fullerton!

Atop Tunnel Mountain

Description: One the final day of my trip, I decided to head back up to the top of Tunnel Mountain before I hit the road for Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. I got up at 8 A.M. and was at the top of the mountain for 10 A.M. for 2 hours of sight-seeing and a little bit of filming. While on top of the mountain filming, I was fortunate enough to catch three rock-climbers as they attempted to scale the steep side of the mountain. It was something I have always wanted to do and to see three climbers in action, it was very exciting for me. I managed to spot them when they were half way up and noticed that one of the three was struggling to get past a very technical section. The three started to question if it was smartest to turn back but in the end, they were able to continue on. It was perfect conditions for the climb. Props to these three brave souls! This is video 4 in the series of 5 videos filmed in Banff.

Sulfur Mountain

Description: Today, Julia Fullerton and I were up dressed and in the gondola by 9am. We took the quick 15 minute ride to the top of Sulfur Mountain and spent the better part of 2 hours up there filming. By 11 am the tourist crowd was unbearable and we rode back down to the base. There is a really great hiking path that runs directly under the gondola, and though it’s open during the winters, Julia notes that it be best taken in the summer. Following the trek up Sulfur Mountain we then decided to head to the natural hot springs for some filming as well as Johnson Canyon. This is video 2 in the series of 5 videos filmed in Banff.

A Quick Tour

Description: Today I hit the road for Banff, Alberta, Canada from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada on the Trans Canada highway. I left at 5 A.M. in the morning so I would get to Banff by 2pm — enough time to work in some filming. Once settled, Julia and I decided to hike up Tunnel Mountain. For this video, we decided to film some ‘tidbits of information’ using Julia as the host. We used the 7D in this video. I have little experience using the 7D and wanted to use this video as the test video for focus pulling off the lens and only using a monopod for support as that would be all I would be able to carry on the trip (because I will be shooting with three cameras). I am not totally sold on the set-up and many of the shots are on the verge of being unusable.

As for the editing and audio, it is very raw and could be be tightened in many areas. Although not a great representation in regards to editing, story, pacing, and cinematography, this video opened up a new way of thinking in regards to the style of the 3 Minute Shorts. Expect a similar tone to some videos in the near future (but much more polished).

We also wanted to use a more “honest” and unrehearsed approach as you will see in the style presented. I am very happy with what we were able to capture on the first day. On the way back down the hill, we were lucky enough to spot some wildlife as well (which you will see in the next videos)! This is the 1st video in a series of 5 to be filmed in Banff!

A Photoshoot in March

Description: This week Julia Fullerton and I headed out on a photo shoot with the theme of ‘spring in the air’. Much like the change from winter to spring, the change of seasons starts slow and then progresses at a rapid pace. In this video I tried to capture the same feeling — starting slow and moving towards something in the distance — in this case — warmer times. This is shown through the journey to the first location of the shoot. As the video progresses and we reach the location, the shoot speeds up.

Coda Fashion Show

Description: Last year, Living Sky Media asked Adam and I if we wanted to film the fashion show put on by Coda Clothing. We decided on a three camera set-up and Adam cut together a pretty catchy promo video. Good job Adam.

PA National Park

Description: In August 2009, Julia-lee Fullerton and decided to head up to Prince Albert National Park to take my new camera for a test run. On this trip, the weather was great. I brought along a Merlin Steadicam to see how it worked with the camera and found out how hard they are to balance — and if not balanced correctly, how impossible it is to use. Filming went well and the two of us dedicated our selves to return the next year to film a longer form project. A year later, I headed back myself and filmed the project, “Grey Owl’s Cabin: A Poetic Journey” which was purchased by SCN for a three year run on their network.

South Saskatchewan River

Description: An afternoon by the river.

Anticipation

Description: This video concept is based off of the word “anticiption”. To help reinforce the idea, this video was filmed in slow motion.
