About John McGrath

I’ve been a session musician and a composer most of my adult life. My father was a amateur videographer in his day, however I have come to it late but its not gonna put me off. It’s a creative experience and this is what I enjoy.

About the Film

A short film I made to document Hurricane Katia as she ran out of steam and started to die off the north Coast of Ireland. With winds Gusting at over 75mph it became apparent that using any kind of tripod or steadicam was a complete waste of time which led to the challenge of filming in this storm. The main concept in this film was just to catch moments that otherwise would have gone unnoticed to anybody caught up in it and as i found out there were quiet a few people (not unlike myself) who wanted to experience it first hand. The Swimmers, the onlookers, and the father and son all wanted to experience nature at her most unpredictable. I feel like me they all got what they wanted that day without anybody being hurt — a storm sometimes makes you feel very much alive.

Equipment Used:

Sony HDR-XR500, SONY wide angle x0.7, KATA rain cover, all hand held.

Education: What I Learned

The most education you get from filming in any situation is the knowledge you couldn’t have possibly imagined before you arrived and started rolling. One thing if anything that I got from this film was “that moment” has to be earned. No amount of staging, lighting, lenses etc can recreate what mother nature or a unexpected person does at any given moment. If your lucky enough to be there and rolling — that in turn becomes your moment. You never stop learning you piggy back on others who have learned and you in turn get piggy backed.
