Karrnnel – Coast/Rain

About the Film

When Amy Matysio asked if I wanted to do a project with her, I was intrigued. HER CONCEPT: Film her boyfriend, Karrnnel Sawitsky, Louis-charles Vigneau, and Daniel Koulack playing at an inner city school, a wartime house, a live-to-tape performance, and an old tyme dance.

This cut is a rough assembly of the footage I captured during the performance at the wartime house jam session. For the first three run-throughs, I used one camera and for the last one, I used two. For all of the takes, the music was played live and there was no scratch track. Syncing is off at some points but overall is very close — as they ended up rearranging the song!

When one listens to Karrnnel play the violin, it takes the ‘fiddle’ music to a different level. Being of slavik background the fiddle is not new to me, it was a very common instrument to be played at local events. It’s a shame that we have lost the beautiful music it brings to us somewhere in the shuffle (rock ‘n roll, jazz, blues, country, etc.). It think it is thro’ individuals like Karrnnel that we will bring the fiddle music back to life again and appreciate its beauty.

I attended the prairie fiddle showcase in Archives Cananda in Ottawa, spring 2011 (during prairiescene) with the talents of Karrnnel, Donny Parenteau, Matthew Contois, John Arcand, Ryan D’Aoust to name a few. I was impressed and entertained beyond words!

Thanks to you Karrnnel and the others for keeping the fiddle alive,
    Fran
